Visakhapatnam Airport has come a long way from serving 1 daily flight due to low numbers of air traffic in the year 1999 to be declared as an airport with an International status on the 16th of June, 2007. With Air Deccan operating their Airbus A320 with addition of JefLite following the same, an announcement was done to start International operations along with the existing domestic operations.

Visakhapatnam Airport also known as the Indira Gandhi  Airport being christened on the name of the first woman Prime Minister of India i.e. Mrs. Indira Gandhi.

Serving the Visakhapatnam District, Visakhapatnam Airport is located approximately 12 km (7.5 mi) Flights from Visakhapatnam Airportfrom Visakhapatnam city and is the second busiest airport in Andhra Pradesh after Hyderabad airport. The airport is controlled by Indian Navy, which carries out air traffic control support for both military and civil traffic. With the construction of a new terminal and runway, and the implementation of international routes to Dubai and Singapore, Visakhapatnam airport has truly gained its international airport. Though a non-towered airport, it has an air traffic control system at present. Controllers based out of ground, direct aircraft movements via radio and other communication links. The airport's new terminal building has 3 Jet bridges.

With a new terminal starting operations after the JetLite airliner marked its beginning, Visakhapatnam saw its wings spreading towards International standards. With 10,500ft and 60meters in length and breadth respectively, Visakhapatnam has seen the installation of Instrument Landing System and Night Landing Capabilities. Satyabhama University also signed a memorandum of understanding with the Airport Authority of India to start a Flying Club & Aeronautical Institute at the airport. This includes duty free shops, twenty check-in counters, and customs and immigration counters, child care centers, snack bars, and special lounges for VIPs and CIP.

Around 114 Central Industrial Security Force personnel provide services at the airport as of 2012 with their duties including access control, checking hand baggage and anti-hijacking operations along with providing security at the airport.
