Shipping Industry in Vishakhapatnam

Visakhapatnam is regarded as one of the 13 most important ports in the country. It is also the only major port of Andhra Pradesh. But in terms of handling cargo, it emerges as the second largest port for volume. Situated right on the eastern coast of the country, Visakhapatnam is located right midway between the ports of Chennai and Kolkata.

Vishakhapatnam Port

History of the Shipping Industry

During the 19th century, the British needed a port in the eastern coast for accessing all the major Central Provinces. Col. H.Cartwright Reid of British Admiralty proposed the construction of a harbor in the town of Visakhapatnam, which was approved only after the First World War. This led to to construction of Inner Harbor that was made by the Bengal Nagpur Railway between 1927 and 1933. The main motive of building the port was to access the manganese ore coming from Central Provinces. The total cost of the port construction was Rs 378 lakhs. Lord Willingdon inaugurated the port on 19 December 1933.

With the advent of the Second World War, Visakhapatnam gained military importance. It was only after the independence of India that the port saw growth through five year plans. From handling merely 3 berths of 1.3 lakh tonnes annually, this port handles about 24 berths today with traffic of more than 65 million tonnes In 1964, the port came under the Major Port Trusts Act, 1963 and Visakhapatnam Port Trust was given charge of the port.

Currently the Visakhapatnam port has 3 harbors namely the outer, inner and fishing harbor. The outer harbour comprises of 6 berths that handles vessels with draft up to 17 meters. The inner harbor is smaller and has 18 berths, which are Panamax compatible. It also has a Dolphin's Nose Hill on the north that helps to protect the harbor from cyclones on the eastern coast. The hinterland extends to Telengana, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and also the south eastern Madhya Pradesh along with southern Odisha and Vidarbha in Maharashtra. The main products being handled here include minerals like steel, Iron ore, manganese, coal crude oil and general cargo.

Modernization of Visakhaptnam Port

The port of Visakhapatnam is being refurbished and modernized. The authorities are hoping to extend the capacity of the port to 130 million tonnes by the end of 2016-17 with Rs 13,000 crores as investment. With the opening of the Gangavaram Port, which is merely 15 km away has shifted some traffic from the port. As a result, it is no longer the major port of the country. Even Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL) that operates the Vizag Steel Plant is now using the new port. With the modernization and refurbishing, the port will be able to handle more traffic and reduce pollution levels too. Other changes will include-

  • Upgrade the general cargo berth for outer harbor so that 2 lakh DWT vessels can be accommodated
  • Inner harbor will be deepened and strengthened
  • Development of a truck parking terminal
  • Multimodal logistics hub
  • 2 50 tonne tugs have been procured
  • Fishing harbor may be reallocated
  • Visakhapatnam Port Trust will also develop a satellite port at Bheemunipatnam, which will cost about Rs2,000 crores
